How We Met

All good things begin with Howies!

If you ask the bride, she'll say she was interested in the cute bartender for years before he noticed her. If you ask the groom, he'll say he pulled out his best lines for her for years (and even stayed after his shift so that he could wait on her table!) before she ever seemed to know what was going on. So, after years of dancing in each other's circles, a mutual friend organized a beach volleyball team at Alpine Inn in La Crosse shortly before the pandemic started, and a love story began. After a few games (and literally falling on each other), it became clear that these were more than flirtatious lines between two friends. The season was cut short due to lockdown but date-nights-in & quarantining quickly became the foundation of a beautiful friendship & the beginning of a lifetime of love.

The Proposal

A girl stays oblivious

On an annual Northwoods trip for Scarecrow Fest, the groom set the scene early by mentioning the possibility of visiting some friends who had recently moved up to the area. Things continued to appear normal as the weekend started with some lady time before the festival in town (nails, sharing outfits, hair... also known as red flag #1). As we got ready to head downtown, the groom mentioned his friends were hosting family and would be headed to Bond Falls (~45 minutes north) and as he had never been, it'd be fun to go and meet them. Now the bride wasn't thrilled... we'd just spent 4 hours in the car, should we spend more time in the car?? But since the groom had never been, her guilt got the better of her. Things were winding down at the festival so we decided to head home and shortly after getting back (very shortly after), the groom mentioned that his friends were on their way to Bond Falls so we should probably leave too (red flag #2). After arriving, we walked around the waterfall and found a bench to wait for our friends. The bride asked when they were expected since we arrived much earlier than they did (red flag #3). The groom followed up by asking for a confession while we waited and no, to this day the bride will not share hers, and he followed up by confessing that his friends were not coming and proposed! It wasn't until we made it back to the house that the bride found out we had to leave so abruptly because the groom's parents were on their way up for the surprise! We spent the evening with elaborate charcuterie boards, champagne, and a decorated house surrounded by family to start off this new chapter together.
