Haris and Selma both taught English in Turkey... but in different years! That didn't stop a few of the mutual friends we made along the way from encouraging the two of us to connect and start talking. Obviously the friends succeeded. Crazy, how far one click of a button and a message goes these days. I guess you could say that it went down in the DMs. After months of exchanging messages and FaceTime calls, Selma and Haris decided to meet in person in February 2017, and the rest is history.

One of Haris' favourite artistes, The Weeknd, has a line in one of his songs that goes something like "I come alive in the fall time". Not completely influenced by a single lyric, Haris chose to propose to Selma in the fall of 2019 at Crawford Lake while out on one of their many scenic fall hikes. Not knowing that COVID-19 would spoil the plan to host a reception several months after the proposal, Haris and Selma went on to be civilly married in Florida in December 2019. The much unanticipated Florida wedding with only some siblings and parents is what they now refer to as their fake-wedding or (f)wedding since the real deal is fast approaching on October 8, 2022. Funny that by the time Haris and Selma have their wedding day they will already have been married for almost 3 years! #JustPandemicThings
