Climb to the top of Nicollet Tower for a breathtaking view of three states. The observation tower honors Joseph N. Nicollet, the French mapmaker who explored the Coteau Des Prairies in the 1830's. The Nicollett Interpretive Center displays John S. Wilson artwork and Nicollet's great map. A video presentation illustrates Nicollet's expedition and describes the culture of the Dakota tribes.
The historic Stavig House, built by Scandinavian craftsmen in 1916, combines elements of the Victorian era with Arts and Crafts style architecture. Sica (pronounced she-cha) Hollow State Park, established in 1968 in northeastern South Dakota, is a haven for trail explorers. Visitors can hike, bike, or ride horseback along 10 miles of multi-use trails through mature oak forests, prairie vistas, and winding draws leading to peaceful streams. Unique underground springs create scenic bogs and waterfalls throughout the park. The park offers year-round beauty, with fall being especially popular for its vibrant display of oak, aspen, maple, and elm colors. Spring and summer bring blooming wildflowers and stargazing by campfires, while winter reveals striking ice formations. With so much to experience, many visitors choose to stay at the campground. Sica Hollow is also nationally recognized, located within the Glacial River Warren and Coteau des Prairies—both National Natural Landmarks—and home to the Trail of the Spirits, a National Recreation Trail.
