We first met in 2009.Patrick’s freshman year and Keimi’s sophomore year of high school. Our first-period art class brought us together, where we sat across from each other at the same table. Patrick was probably more focused on making Keimi laugh than actually finishing any art projects (and Keimi will confirm that his drawing skills still haven’t improved). What started as light-hearted conversations slowly turned into a real friendship. We began texting, talking, and eventually, we were hanging out all the time. Patrick would come to Keimi’s soccer practices—not because he loved soccer, but because he loved spending time with her and afterward, he’d walk her home almost every day. In September 2010, we officially started dating and became the classic high school sweethearts. We went to school dances together, helped each other with homework (well, mostly Keimi helping Patrick), and made so many memories during those early years. After high school, life took us in different directions. We parted ways but stayed in touch, checking in here and there. Years passed, we grew, we changed but that connection never completely faded. Eventually, as adults, life gave us a second chance, and we didn’t waste it. Now, here we are older, wiser (kind of), and still laughing together. We’re so grateful that life brought us back to each other. It turns out that sometimes, your first love really is your forever love. And yes, Patrick still can’t draw, and Keimi still pretends to like his music playlists. Some things never change.
