Self-described as Raleigh's Central Park, this is one of the most interesting spots of land in the city. Dorothea Dix was previously the campus for a mental health facility until it closed in 2000 and then was purchased by the City of Raleigh. Check out their weekend yoga or many of the events and festivals held at the park each year.
Home to a wide range of works, from Rodin to Raphael, the NC Museum of Art is one of our favorite places to visit on the weekend. The permanent collections are all free of charge, and the exhibitions are always carefully selected. Be sure to check out Liz's favorite sculpture, the Bride by Beth Lipman, and Adam's favorite Study for Homage to the Square by Josef Albers.
This is our local watering hole in Raleigh. In a city full of breweries, this one stands out for wide breadth of options, spacious open outdoor and indoor seating, and, of course, dog-friendliness. Liz recommends the Hidden Pipe Porter and Adam recommends the First Squeeze Wheat Ale. If you're into home brewing, check out the Atlantic Brew Supply next door for all your beer making needs.
With 164 acres of trails amid outdoor sculptures, this is the perfect place for a picnic or leisurely stroll in the summer. The park has access to the local greenway, which connects well-kept trails and paths all throughout the Capital Area.
The southeast's largest science museum is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Grab a cup of coffee at the Daily Planet Cafe and then check out the skeleton of Stumpy the Blue Whale and Acro, the "Terror of the South". Don't miss the butterfly room on the fourth floor while you're here--you may even spot the two-toed sloth who lives there!
