How We Met

The very beginning from Tim's perspective...

Hannah and I met while attending James Madison University in our campus ministry, Reformed University Fellowship. She and I met at RUF's lawn games event, which was one of the welcome week events that RUF had in August of my senior year. To me at the time, she was just a new student checking out RUF for the first time, but as I've reflected back on the time, I had heard of Hannah before our first meeting. All of my junior year, I attended RUF's prayer group, during which we prayed for situations and individuals weekly. A name that had been on our whiteboard every week to pray for was Hannah W. and her mom. God, in His good providence, had me praying for my soon-to-be wife before I had even met her or knew who she was! After Hannah and I had met in person for the first time, a couple of months went by where we were merely acquaintances. We had a couple more interactions through RUF's worship team, which we both served on, and at RUF's fall conference, which was a weekend retreat that took place in September. It wasn't until October 15th that we would crack that acquaintanceship. That Friday night we were planning to hang out with a group of friends, but all our other friends were either out of town or busy that night, so while I was eating dinner in JMU's dining hall, I got a text from Hannah that said, "hey!! not sure what you're doing after bmash, but i'd love to hang to get to know you better!!! no worries if your busy tonight :)" I told her yes and then proceeded to invite my roommate to hang out with us too. That night the three of us went to Walmart and got ice cream from a shop in Harrisonburg. I did not do too much talking that night until The Girl Is Mine by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney came on in the car. I was surprised that Hannah knew that song and we both broke out into singing, she did Michael's part and I did Paul's part. That was the most fun I had singing loudly in the car with someone! During that same weekend, I found out that my pastor who baptized me as a baby had passed away. So, on Sunday night of that weekend, Hannah texted me to ask how I was doing. She then offered to talk with me that night, so we went on a drive together that night. We talked for 7 hours, telling funny stories from our summers, talking about how to wrestle with hard things like death, and getting to know more about each other. It was the sweetest car ride and conversation, and I knew that she was someone who connected with me better than anyone ever could. The next morning, she called me and asked me out on a date! I was so excited to know that the feeling was mutual between us. I can't wait to pray with and for, hang out with, sing with, drive with, and talk with my beautiful Hannah until the day either of us takes our last breath!
