Crime against tourists is practically unheard of in Cartagena. You will stay safe in the city as long as you use common sense and exercise normal precautions!
The currency in Cartagena, Colombia is Colombian Pesos (COP). To find out how much something costs In Colombia, you can simply divide the cost by the day's exchange rate. You can find the exchange rate by simply googling "1usd in COP". For example, today's exchange rate is 4,400. So if I'm in Colombia and I want to know how much a $41,000-COP meal will be in US dollars, I'd divide it by 4,400 and get $9.31. Almost everywhere in Cartagena takes card as a form of payment. However, we do recommend exchanging some money into pesos to use for things like souvenir's, snacks, and taxis.
Cartagena is a small and very walkable historic town. You will not need to rent a car and taxis are easily accessible. Although inexpensive, we recommend you ask your driver how much it costs to get to your location beforehand.
The ride from the airport to the historic center is about 15 minutes. The yellow cabs outside the airport are safe. The cost is ~20 mil pesos (approximately $5).
