Our Story

Jake and Hannah’s story began at Grand Canyon University, though neither of them knew how meaningful that first moment would become. The very first time Hannah saw Jake was at the pool. She nudged her friend and whispered, “Who is that boy? He is so cute.” Her friend told her who he was, but Hannah assumed nothing would come of it. Meanwhile, Jake had noticed her too—and went straight to his friends talking about “the girl at the pool.” Not long after, Hannah’s friend invited her to an intramural basketball game, fully aware Jake would be there. As soon as the game ended, Jake walked up to her and said, “Hi, Hannah.” Wanting to play it cool, she smiled and replied, “Wait… what was your name again?” even though she definitely knew. Jake laughed, and from there they started seeing each other more—through mutual friends, Chick-fil-A runs, and conversations that always felt easy. Spring break arrived, sending Hannah to Hawaii and Jake to California. While he was gone, one of Jake’s friends messaged Hannah saying, “He will not stop talking about you this whole trip.” That was the sign she needed. She reached out and texted Jake: “Hi, this is Hannah.” He replied right away, and they fell into a steady back-and-forth. When she told him she got back on Friday, he decided to go for it and asked her out. Hannah ran to her friends, jumping and screaming, before sending back an enthusiastic “Yes.” Their first date—mini golf and ice cream—was relaxed, fun, and felt surprisingly familiar for two people who had only known each other a short time. They spent the night laughing and talking, and by the end of it, Jake kept the glow-in-the-dark wristband from mini golf. It still hangs in his truck today. From there, everything moved forward naturally. They dated through their entire senior year, graduated, and then took on a year of long distance. It wasn’t easy, but they made it work. Eventually, Hannah moved to Spokane, and being in the same city again brought a whole new level of excitement to their relationship. After the move, the topic of engagement came up almost daily—sometimes jokingly, sometimes seriously, but always with the same shared direction. Jake knew he wanted the proposal to happen somewhere meaningful, so he chose the Nubble Lighthouse in Maine—the exact place where he had first asked her to be his girlfriend. And that’s how a glance at the pool, a perfectly timed message, and one simple first date turned into the story they’re writing together now.
