The Abbey's History

The Wedding Website of Hannah Farbstein and Aidan Higgins
The Abbey on Monroe was first constructed in 1929 as the First Baptist Church. In January 1984, a fire was set inside the church, which spread out of control and destroyed wood structural members including floor joists and roof trusses, as well as interior woodwork and plaster ceilings. Masonry walls and concrete floors survived, leaving the historic church building a roofless ruin. Community groups and the City of Phoenix stepped in to save the church from demolition, installing structural reinforcement and protective covers. The Abbey reopened to the public in 2024 and is now repurposed as a venue space! Early on into our venue hunt, we found that no where felt "special" enough or spoke to us. When we discovered the Abbey, we were immediately drawn in. Its faith origins, exposed stonework and distinctive open-air courtyard solidified this was where we wanted to get married. It’s the perfect blend of romance and history, and we can’t wait for you to experience it with us!
