How We Met

January 14th, 2024

Hanna's POV - Picture this - It's a cold Sunday morning in January 2024 and I'm sitting alone in church, waiting for the music to start, and scanning the room for any of my friends to appear so I don't have to sit by myself. The highlight of my day is the movie night I have planned later. Just after the music starts, I hear the door open and I see a (REALLY CUTE) new guy in a big, black, puffy jacket sit in the back, near the door. I decided now was the perfect time to offer gum to the friends that trickled in and sat behind me... in the direction of the new guy. I tried to sneakily catch a glance at him but he saw me, held eye contact, and smiled very smoothly. I panicked and looked away. By the end of the meeting, I mustered up the courage to go talk to him. It was my responsibility after all as I was on the leadership team at church. As I approached, other people converged so all I got out was a small "Hi" and I kept walking. Before I went to leave at the very end, I saw him in the hallway and decided now was my opportunity to do what any well intentioned church member looking to help out would do - introduce myself and see if he needed a ride to church. God was on my side when Cristhian said he did need a ride but God also chose that right now was a great chance for me to work on humility when I quickly realized the more-than-slight language barrier despite our best efforts. We nervously fumbled through exchanging numbers (for a ride to church, of course) and I left with two realizations - 1. the highlight of my day is no longer the movie night and 2. I never asked for his name. Cristhian’s POV - We met at the YSA of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was my first time attending a YSA sacrament meeting in the United States. When I opened the door, Hanna looked at me three times. She thought I hadn’t seen her. I remember looking at her from behind with her striking red hair and wearing a jean jacket. After the sacrament meeting ended, she came over to say hello to me, but she was walking too fast and I couldn’t say hello back. I had to go to elder quorum class quickly and I didn’t have the chance to talk to her. After classes ended, all the young members gathered again. I was getting to know different members until Hanna came up to me and said hello. I remember being nervous at the time and even more so that my English wasn’t good enough to understand her. She introduced herself and offered to help me with transportation on Sundays to go to church. Her wavy red hair, her green eyes, and her patience and energy were making me nervous. She was filled with her beauty, both external and internal. I thanked her for the help she offered me and with my very strange accent, I accepted. We exchanged cell phone numbers at that moment. She had an interview with the stake president and I had to work. I was very happy to talk to her again, but I had to go. When I got home from work, we started talking to each other that same day.
