It all started when Hang and Dinh’s mutual friend, Linda, invited the both of them to Disneyland. Dinh, who was single at the time, had asked Linda “if there were any cute girls going?” She replied “Yes, but they’re all taken.” Not being too discouraged he decided to go anyways. Hang, Linda and friends were all eating at Carthay Circle in California Adventure when Dinh arrived. There were no seats available but once everyone had moved over, the empty chair for Dinh was placed right next to Hang. Little did they know that the person whom they had just met would be the love of their life. After that day, they ran into each other more and more at their mutual friend’s events but they didn’t think to pursue any relationship since they seemingly thought they had different personalities. Hang thought Dinh was more liberal, while Dinh thought Hang was more conservative. They were also living in separate cities at the time. Then after many encounters, Dinh approached Hang at Van and Ernie’s wedding to let her know that he moved to San Diego. This triggered them to realize a potential relationship and they hit it off that night, having had really good conversations with a lot of laughing. Soon after, they went on their first date to the Del Mar fair. The date went perfect, which resulted in them holding hands throughout the evening. Thereafter, they went on many more dates and couldn’t stop thinking about each other, leading to their engagement.
Dinh planned the proposal when he and Hang's family were planning their trip to Vietnam. He knew that this is a special destination for Hang as she speaks very fondly of her childhood growing up here. He planned to propose at the beautiful Intercontinental Danang Peninsula Resort, a place that Hang has always wanted to visit ever since she saw The Amazing Race Vietnam. He and Hang's brother tricked her into thinking that she will only get to dine at the restaurant but not stay at the hotel. All the meanwhile, they had arranged for an overnight stay and asked the restaurant staff to sit them at booth with the balcony view overlooking the ocean. Due to unexpected rain, some of Dinh's plans for day were diverted. He managed to get Hang outside of the restaurant and as both of them were enjoying the view, he commented how the day had reminded him of the Lotus folk poem that Hang had recently translated and explained the meaning to him. The lotus rises and blooms beautifully, untainted by its murky & muddy surroundings; it is pure, beautiful, and vibrant. He said even though the rain had brought about a cloudy and muddy surroundings, that their love is like the lotus; a beauty untainted by the circumstances that they are in. And then he got down on one knee and proposed!
