Rachel: Following a fun weekend celebrating the marriage of Chris' sister (and my MOH) Rebecca to Cliff, our families attended a Mother's Day brunch at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. I figured this was to give us extra time with Cliff & Bec before they left for their honeymoon and of course, to honor our moms. Chris was on his best behavior, giving me plenty of time to get ready, but then he kept disappearing at brunch. When he wouldn't finish his meal, which I ended up finishing for him, I asked, "what is wrong with you?" Little did I know, it was because he was nervous about what he was about to do. When he began to give a toast and mentioned how he caught the garter at the wedding, I froze. Next thing I knew he was on one knee and I was immediately pulling him up to hug him in tears, forgetting to say "yes." It was the greatest surprise of my life! Chris: Like any good proposal it was shrouded in secrecy. I weaved a web of lies to make Rachel believe that I was going to pop the question at least 6 months later than I intended to. Planning months in advance with my sister, Rebecca, we decided that I should propose at brunch the day after her wedding, which was conveniently attended by Rachel’s family and mine. Word got out at the wedding and I’m fairly certain all 350 guests knew that I was going to ask Rachel to marry me the next day… except for Rachel. I am particularly proud of Rachel’s mom for keeping the secret for so long (especially considering that I caught the garter the night before). Nevertheless, after a few close calls we managed to surprise Rachel. The entire party was sat on the beautiful balcony of the Omni overlooking the Appalachian Mountains – a perfect venue for a perfect day. I stood up to toast the bride and groom and to wish our moms a happy Mother’s Day. As my toast ended I turned to Rachel, took a small box out of my jacket pocket, and before I could even open it she began to cry. I think somewhere in there she said “yes.”
