Bela and Hana met the summer before their first year of college at UC Santa Cruz's Wilderness Orientation, a backpacking trip for incoming freshmen. Bela and Hana were assigned to the same peak, Triple Divide. The day before their trip started, they were instructed to talk to one person they didn't already know. Before Hana even had a chance to feel anxious about this task, Bela walked straight towards her and asked her what her interests were. She told him she wrote music and played the keyboard. He enthusiastically let her know that he was a bassist and that he would love to jam with her. Put off by his seemingly cocky demeanor, she said, "yeah, totally" with zero intention of actually making music with him. The next several days as they backpacked through the wilderness they found themselves always hiking side by side. Hana made deadpan jokes and grotesque observations while Bela followed along laughing in his short shorts. Hana's reservations about Bela quickly faded and soon they were getting scolded by their guides for singing their favorite Daft Punk songs under the stars (it was 2007 okay?) while the rest of the group was trying to sleep. By the end of the week, Hana and Bela were best friends. By the end of their first month of school, they had formed a band and were making murals in their campus apartment. The next summer, they adopted their dog Marina and they've been a family ever since.
