The Proposal

Nick and Jenn had always dreamed of traveling to Alaska one day, so they decided to make that dream a reality by taking a cruise down the Inside Passage. The trip was everything they hoped for—whale watching, kayaking, hiking, and endless sightseeing through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Jenn had a feeling that Nick might propose on the trip, but Nick knew she was suspicious—so, naturally, he decided to keep her guessing. He waited until the very last day of their adventure, when they reached Vancouver, to finally pop the question. Determined to throw her off, Nick spent the entire day taking Jenn to all the most beautiful spots around Vancouver. They started at Queen Elizabeth Park, wandering through the gardens and soaking in the views, then made their way to a suspension bridge and Totem Pole Park, where they strolled high among the trees. Jenn was having the time of her life—completely carefree and blissfully unaware—while Nick was silently stressing over the timing of his big plan. By mid-afternoon, Nick was running through his proposal speech in his head for what was probably the hundredth time, trying to memorize it perfectly. When 4:00 p.m. hit, he knew it was time to head to Lighthouse Park, the special spot he’d chosen for the proposal. He had found it through a photographer he’d hired online, who described it as a “short hike” to a beautiful ocean overlook. Well… “short hike” was an understatement. The trail split in about five different directions, and there was Nick—one hand awkwardly shoved in his pocket trying to hide the ring box bulge—navigating what felt like a maze, all while keeping Jenn from catching on. Thankfully, Jenn was completely distracted by the deer along the trail, stopping to admire every little thing while Nick tried not to panic about running late for their sunset photo session. Finally, they reached the lookout point. Just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, Jenn—suddenly chatty and a little nervous herself without knowing why—turned around to find Nick down on one knee. The speech Nick had practiced for hours instantly vanished from his memory, and he found himself having to completely wing it. Neither Nick nor Jenn really remembers exactly what was said in that moment, but whatever it was must have worked—because Jenn said YES to marrying Nick. After the proposal, they took photos and spent time along the shore, watching barges drift inland as the sky turned gold and pink. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable trip—and the start of their greatest adventure yet.
