HOW WE MET
Derek reached out to me via Twitter in 2014. He found my Twitter account through a suggested friend and wanted to get to know me. I never thought it would be something serious once I saw Derek lived in Kansas. However, I ended up messaging him back and we started talking every day. Our text messages turned into late night phone calls & eventually into FaceTime calls. Even though we were 4 hours away from each other, we wanted to make it work!
MEETING IN PERSON
On August 7th, 2015 we finally got to meet in person. After talking on the phone and through a screen for over a year, we were so excited to meet. Derek and his mom drove to Norman and met my family and I at Ted's for dinner. We both remember feeling many different emotions, such as nervous, awkward, and excited. To know someone only through the phone and finally getting to meet them in person was beyond exciting. We were both so happy we got to spend the weekend together and go on our first date. Derek asked me to be his girlfriend at the Warren Theater in Moore on Saturday, August 8th. We were so happy to start officially dating and couldn't wait to see each other again!
DEREK MOVES TO OKLAHOMA
Derek and I did long distance for two years. It was really difficult at times for the both of us, especially when we had to say goodbye. Even though we were four hours away from each other, we saw each other once or twice a month, went to prom together, and spent some holidays together. I remember the day Derek told me he was moving to Oklahoma. We talked about it some but we were FaceTiming and he told me he is looking at apartments in Norman. I was so happy that he was going to move down to Oklahoma for me and for our relationship. We spent a weekend in Norman figuring out which apartment would be best for him to live in. In July 2017, right after our trip to Hawaii, Derek moved into his apartment. We both knew this would change our relationship in so many great ways.
THE PROPOSAL
We decided to go to Medicine Park in Oklahoma for a weekend getaway to celebrate the end of my summer classes. We left Friday evening on July 23rd and drove straight to Mt. Scott. After walking around, looking at the amazing view, Derek and I decided we should set up our camera on our tripod to take some pictures. Derek kept looking around for the perfect spot to take pictures, which I thought was kinda weird, since he usually wants to get pictures over with! He hit the record button on the camera and after posing for a few pictures, he grabbed my hands and got on one knee! I was so surprised and it was such a beautiful moment! After taking some more pictures, we went back to the Airbnb to call and FaceTime all of our family to share the exciting news!
