This is an easy walk from the hotel and once you enter grounds there is no traffic to deal with. From Hilton turn left onto 5th street, left on Grace Street and continue straight to Capitol Grounds (about 5 minutes). For a different view, come back to hotel up Franklin Street. Turn right on 5th. On the capitol grounds Look For: Virginia Washington Monument, Virginia Women’s Monument, Capitol Building, Governor’s Mansion which is the oldest, continuously inhabited Governor’s residence in the US
Tredegar Iron Works houses the American Civil War Museum. It is a non-profit so there is an admission fee. For Civil War buffs, it is worth it. They have a great Gift Shop at the entrance that is also worth a visit especially for great books for all ages. Walking past the Tredegar Iron Works, you come to a bridge suspended underneath a very large bridge that spans the James River. Take the steps to ascend to the suspended bridge for a great walk to Belle Island. Belle Island was a Civil War Prison as well as other roles throughout Richmond history. It has a loop trail that takes about 30 minutes to complete and gives great views of the James River.
This bridge chronicles the evacuation of Richmond as the Union Army approaches after the fall of Petersburg. A little over halfway across is another historical site; The spot where Alfonso proposed to Halle. Check your “Save the Date” to get the perspective. When you reach the south side of the river, two options Consider taking the path up to the top of the lookout for a view of the city. Otherwise, due to time constraints, turn around and recross the bridge to either return to the hotel or go to the Tredegar Iron Works and/or Belle Island.
About a 10-minute drive. A great for kids outdoor space that used to be one of the premier estates in Richmond. No Admission unless you want to tour the Mansion. It has a petting zoo, Japanese gardens, Nature Center and lots of open space. Recommend parking at the Maymont Farm parking lot off Spottswood Rd
Along with Children’s Museum - 10 minute drive. Housed in the old Main Train Station (the Children’s Museum is a new building adjacent to the Station). Admission fee required. The Train Station has historical significance to the Carcaise Family as this is where Mike (Dad) would stop on his travels to and from Fork Union Military School during WWII.
Near Science Museum/Children’s Museum. VMFA is the 9th largest art museum in the country. Free Admission: Donations appreciated. Great collections of Faberge eggs and Mellon art. Has two restaurants in case you need a bite.
Next door to VMFA. Admission: $12/adult. Good museum of Virginia History. Good gift shop with great book selection
12-minute drive, near VMFA Several shops along Cary Street between Nansemond Street and Arthur Ashe Blvd (The Blvd). Also has restaurants and other eateries. Can Can Brasserie good place for lunch, coffee and people watching

This 8x8 block revitalized former light industrial area is now home to: Breweries – 11 (10 technically in Scotts Addition, but Hardywood is nearby and a family favorite). Cideries – 2 Meadery – 1 Winery – 1 Distilleries - 3 There are several good restaurants in this area as well.
