Nate and Haley met at St. Olaf College in October 2012. Nate was assigned to be lab partners with Haley's roommate and came over to work on an assigned project. The first thing Nate noticed about Haley was her voice! After getting to know each other better, Nate and Haley soon realized they had a lot in common. They stayed good friends throughout college and began dating after college in 2019.

Nate was planning to ask Mark, Haley's dad, for his blessing at their Thanksgiving get together; however, Thanksgiving was cancelled due to a huge snowstorm. This delayed Nate's plan to propose the following week when Nate and Haley closed on their first house together in Minnetrista. Nate had to wait until the following weekend to ask Mark for his blessing when he came to help them move furniture into the new house. Mark offered to help Nate with the proposal by asking Haley where her favorite place in the house was (thinking Haley would say the big picturesque window over looking their property) and Nate could drop to one knee. Much to Nate and Mark's surprise Haley said excitedly "My closet!" and proceeded to open her closet door and go inside. Nate was thinking to himself that he was not going to propose in the closet... Nate ended up proposing to Haley in their living room after the last piece of furniture was moved into their home - and the rest is history! ❤
