Question

About the Wedding Ceremony

Answer

The wedding ceremony will be a Catholic Nuptial Mass celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Also known as the Traditional Latin Mass, it is the predominant form of Catholic liturgy formally standardized in 1570 after the Council of Trent (preserving the basic structure of the Mass used since antiquity) until the reforms of the 1960s promulgated the Ordinary Form of the Mass most commonly seen in the world today.

Question

What is the Traditional Latin Mass?

Answer

The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) is different from the Ordinary Mass in several important ways. Here's what to expect: LANGUAGE Latin is the official language of the Catholic Church, and the TLM is celebrated entirely in Latin with few exceptions, such as select prayers, readings, and the priest's homily. ORIENTATION The priest, and all of us in attendance, face the altar in a common direction of prayer towards God. MUSIC Gregorian chant, traditional hymns, and sometimes the organ is heard instead of contemporary music. PARTICIPATION The TLM emphasizes reverence, prayer, and quiet contemplation instead of vocal participation. There is also more kneeling and genuflection than in the Ordinary Mass. COMMUNION Most importantly, Holy Communion is received from the priest directly on the tongue while kneeling on the altar rail. This is to encourage humility and respect for the Body of Christ. Holy Communion may only be received by those who are members of the Catholic Church living in a state of grace, free of mortal sin.
