Estes Park is 90 minutes (60 miles) north and west of Denver. It is a small mountain community at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. December is the off season, but Estes Park is Haddi's hometown. She grew up in Estes and has always wanted a magical winter wedding in the mountains.
The wedding was planned on a Monday for several reasons. Travel on Saturday is advised so that in case of delays, you'll still have time. DIA is the busiest airport in the country, but it also has state of the art de-icing technology and because of the normal Colorado winter weather, it is rare for flights to be significantly disrupted due to weather. As far as driving goes, there are 3 ways in and out of Estes Park which is nestled at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park in the Colorado mountains. All three roads are state highways, and are well maintained by CDOT along with county and city crews. We rarely have any issues with driving no matter the snowfall. As well, December is the lowest winter month for snow totals historically.
It's a personal preference, and depends on whether you stay in an outbound cabin or in town, but for most road conditions, front wheel drive is sufficient. Four wheel or AWD is always best, but many people do just fine with front wheel drive vehicles.
If you are from a very low altitude, remember that Estes Park Colorado is at 7522 feet above sea level. Most people have no problem with the altitude, but rule of thumb is to drink lots and lots of water (it is a VERY arid and dry climate), and take it easy for the first 24 hours or so if you are feeling woozy. Try not to go on any major hikes! Altitude sickness is just feeling nauseated or woozy while your body adjusts to the different barometric pressure of high altitude.
Another reason we chose to get married in Colorado besides the amazing scenery, is that we thought many of you might want to extend a few days at the beginning or end of your trip for a little magical mountain vacation. We have lots of things to do in the area listed on the "Things To Do" page of this website.
Typically, in December the weather is mild. Although it is cold, Colorado enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year. Many days in December historically are in the 40s with sunshine, so it doesn't feel that cold. Of course, mother nature is unpredictable so bring layers of clothing so you can add or remove as needed! Estes Park specifically is often compared to a real-life Hallmark movie. It is a quaint village with beautiful lights, Holiday decorations, and truly like waking up in a magical snow globe. See the "Things to Do" page of this website for information on Holiday activities during the weekend of the wedding.
Our wedding will be a time for adult celebration, so we ask that you make other arrangements for any children so that the adults can fully enjoy the party! We will have an on-site day care area with a qualified 'sitter' for any little ones that have traveled with you if you wish. We will also provide "Busy Bags" for the little ones which can be picked up at the Welcome Party!
Colorado is a very pet friendly state. Although you furry pals will not be allowed at the wedding venue itself, most of the hotels listed on the Hotels and Transportation page of this website allow pets (it is noted in the description). Outside of the wedding and reception, many restaurants allow pets on patios, or in craft beer rooms. Most stores allow leashed pets in with their owners. Rocky Mountain National Park does not allow dogs on trails within the park boundaries, but there are many, many trails and hikes that you can hike with your pet!
Save the Date cards were mailed in early January. A formal invitation, along with the ability to RSVP electronically, or a mailed RSVP card will be in that formal invitation package along with dates!
The colors Matt and Haddi have selected for their wedding are Dusty Blue, Navy Blue, and Silver accents. Jewel tones (emerald, burgundy, sapphire) will make up the complementary accent colors. While there is not a "theme" per se, this is a semi formal event in a fantastic mountain setting. Please no jeans, shorts, or tshirts.
