August 20, 2018 Our story begins in the heart of California’s central valley, at the University of California, Merced. Jeanine was a 3rd year Public Health and Arts student who wanted to dive into a Campus Activities Event Planning organization. She found her home away from home through this organization, which made it more fitting when she crossed paths with Gustavo; a 5th year Mathematics and Science Education student who was an event leader. The UC Merced Campus Activities Board is one they will forever be grateful for.
October 16, 2019 In December of 2018, Jeanine and Gustavo began working together more often. They quickly bonded and became the inseparable best friends that everyone always believed were more than “just friends”. Gustavo graduated in May of 2019, and continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, while Jeanine stayed in Merced to complete her Bachelor's Degree. Though the two were apart, what they thought would be the end of their friendship, only made them stronger. The two texted and video called almost every night, and Gustavo soon realized that his feelings for Jeanine were more than just friends. On October 16, 2019, Gustavo took the opportunity to express his feelings to Jeanine and asked her out through a video call. Since then, Jeanine and Gustavo continued their adventures together despite the long distance.
March 13, 2022 On a weekend trip to Bakersfield to design their soon-to-be home, Gustavo surprised Jeanine with a quick morning stroll at Riverwalk Park; the first place he took Jeanine to on her very first trip to the city. Just around the lake, he had set up flower petals in the shape of a heart, a bouquet of her favorite flowers, and letters that spelled the words “Marry Me”. Gustavo got down on one knee, pulled out a handwritten letter, and asked Jeanine the special question “Will you marry me?” Excited to begin this new journey together, she said YES.
