It was the summer of 2014 and I (Julia) was headed back to Swift Nature Camp in WI for my 11th summer. When I arrived, I saw many old friends, and many new ones. One of those, was Dylan. You see, Dylan was from Tennessee, and had come to camp thanks to his friend Zach. Over the first two weeks of that summer, I got to know this funny, charming, generous and kind man. By the end of training, I had started to fall for him and by the end of camp, we were both starting to fall in love. But 10 weeks is a short time, and before we knew it camp was over. We faced a tough decision, what do we do now? Dylan was going home to TN, and I was going back to school in Seattle. Could we do this long distance thing? Well, as you can guess, we decided to give it a try. Over the next two years, we learned the joys and struggles of a long distance relationship. There were many late night Skype calls and long flights between Seattle and Chattanooga. After two years, Dylan got a job in working at YMCA Camp Orkila teaching outdoor education and sailing. The next summer, I received a job offer with NOAA. We packed up our things and drove 3,334 miles across the country to Norfolk, VA. That December, two days after Christmas, I flew down to Tennessee so we could spend New Years together. With plans to meet up with Dylan’s grandmother for dinner, we got dressed up and headed downtown, but apparently, she was running late. Dylan suggested we pass the time by taking a walk on the Walnut St Bridge. You see, this was all a ruse. We walked halfway down the bridge when I noticed two people sitting on a bench. It was our friends Brooke and Zach and they were signing, “Swept Away” by the Avett Brothers (aka, our song). This is about when I figured out what was going on. Dylan asked me to dance. When the song ended, Dylan took my hands in his, told me how much he loved me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. I said, “No.” Just kidding! Of course I said yes!!
