How We Met

Summer 2012

(Jake's perspective) It was the summer of 2012, Amy and I met at the tennis courts of Krum High School. I had a crush on Amy, but she was WAY out of my league. I went to Krum High School and Amy went to Denton Calvary. I was a goofball and Amy was shy with a kind spirit. Our tennis coach would always pair us up to play doubles together and you wouldn't believe the awkwardness that transpired... We were pretty good though! Thankfully, a friend group formed on those tennis courts and we all began to hang out for the rest of the summer. Amy didn't care to entertain my thoughts of dating, but she had a relationship with Jesus and was persistent to share of her faith. Amy along with her sister (Laura) took me to Church at Denton Bible. I didn't have a ton of interest at first, but I got to spend time with Amy and Laura so I wasn't too mad about it. (Amy's perspective) My sister, Laura and I, picked Jake up every Sunday to go to church. He wore black slacks, a button down shirt, and usually a colorful tie. He was committed and consistent but I didn't even think about dating him. After a little time of him coming to church, reading his bible, and meeting other Believers, I got a phone call from Jake. He told me he was reading through Jonah the night before and surrendered his life to Jesus. This was the turning point in Jake's life that I will forever be grateful for. Jake continued to spend time with our family and friends all through high school. He was like a brother to me, probably much to his chagrin.

Dating

Fall 2018

(Amy's perceptive) After high school, we went our separate ways. Jake graduated from DBU, worked at Sky Ranch, and took a job at Denton Bible Church as the college coordinator where he is currently working. I left Denton and went to the Aveda Institute in Austin, TX. After that I worked at Ruiz Salon in downtown Austin for about three years before moving back to Denton. It was not uncommon for Jake and I to have our, ever so often, FaceTime or phone calls to catch up on each others lives. Every time we chatted it was like no time had passed. He called me from his dorm room at DBU, his Sky Ranch camp in Colorado, called me when he took the job at Denton Bible, but the FaceTime call in the fall of 2018 was the one that finally changed my heart towards Jake. I downloaded an app called Houseparty, a FaceTiming app that allows you to chat with multiple people, in order for me to keep up with my friends who married and moved from Austin. The funny thing about this app is when you get on, it will notify all your friends that you are "in the house". Unknowingly to me, Jake was one of my friends on the app. I soon got a call from Jake Johnson, we talked for about two hours. As I hung up, I thought to myself.. "Huh, somethings different about him..." We found ourselves conveniently getting on the app to see who would get the notification first and initiate a call. After about a month of this, Jake planned a trip to Austin to spend some time together. He sacrificed a speeding ticket, an expensive haircut, and a less than 24hr trip to Austin in order to ask me on a date. I was thrilled. It was about about three months in and Jake started planting the seed in my mind to move back to Denton, TX. At first, it was a definite no. However, over time God softened my heart and I decided to move home Spring of 2019.

The Proposal

(Jake's Perspective) Amy is a hairstylist, and like most good stylists, she is always looking to advertise her work to other people in order to build client. So Amy had reached out to one of my friends from DBU, Lauren Whicker, about joining up with her to do a photoshoot. At the time Lauren didn't have any big projects she was shooting for her business, but I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to capitalize on. I reached out to Lauren in January about inviting Amy to do a photoshoot with the SMALL twist of me crashing the photoshoot to propose to Amy. Lauren took my idea and turned it into a much better reality than I could have imagined. The plan was set... Valentine's day at the Lumen Room in Plano. A day both of us would never forget. After weeks of hiding plans, texts, and details from Amy (With incredible work from all our friends and family). It was finally Valentine's Day. I was sitting outside the Lumen Room feeling composed and ready to go. I finally got the green light to sneak into the room while Amy was getting photos taken. I felt calm and poised in the pocket... and then I saw Amy. My heart started to burst at the seams, my hands were shaking, my breaths got really short. But I kept walking towards her until finally she saw me. Her surprised reaction was the absolute best. I gave her a big hug. I told her that I had been daydreaming of getting to be with her since my chemistry class in 10th grade (2nd period, Ms. Lightfoot). I praised God for His kindness to both of us in allowing this day to come to fruition. Then I told her that I loved her for the very first time and I hope to commit to that everyday for the rest of my life. From that moment I hit a knee and put a ring on her finger. Amy said yes and we celebrated all day and late into the night. We celebrated with stories, with memories, with food, with friends, and with our families. 2/14/20 A day we hope to remember for the rest of our lives.
