6.4 miles, 2208 ft elevation, 5 hour hike The Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park It leads to two waterfalls: The famous Mist Trail leads to two different waterfalls: the powerful Vernal Fall and the taller Nevada Fall. During peak season, the trail's name comes to life as hikers get soaked by the spray from Vernal Fall. Thousands of stairs: The trail is known for the challenging "Giant Staircase"—thousands of slippery, granite stone steps that take hikers up the side of Vernal Fall. An easier way back: Many hikers complete the loop by returning via the John Muir Trail, which is less steep and provides different scenic views of the area. A historic trail: The construction of the Mist Trail began in the 1870s, as part of an effort to provide safe access for tourists. This was following the Yosemite Grant of 1864, the first instance of land being set aside by the U.S. federal government for preservation and public use.
