How We Met

Summer 2016

It was July 2nd, 2016, when Greg first laid his eyes on Chelsea. It was an Independence Day party held at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, where she worked. "Wow, who's that girl in the red?" he asked his friend, referring to Chelsea. Little did anyone know, this was the beginning of their love story. After a fun day with friends that carried on into the wee hours of the evening, the two went their separate ways. Although they both stayed on eachothers minds, it wouldnt be until a few months later that Greg swooped in and made his move --- of course by sliding in her DMs on Instagram. After a few weeks of texting nonstop, he finally convinced her go on a date with him to Geronimo's Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill in Fairfield, CT, where they drank margaritas, ate quesadillas, and watched the Cubs play the Indians in the World Series. At the end of the night, they shared their first kiss outside under the stars.

The Proposal

May 25, 2019

Months before May 25th, Greg had started telling friends and family that he was going to propose on Memorial Day weekend, which he and Chelsea annually take with a group of friends as a long getaway weekend to Chelsea’s family home in Westhampton Beach on Long Island. He had an idea in his mind of how he wanted it to look. With the help of those who were in on the secret, the weekend started to take shape. The group went out for lunch to celebrate Molly’s birthday and then did a little shopping in town before heading home. The plan was for Chelsea and Sammy to head out for groceries while the rest of the group set up. As she drove away, the butterflies arrived. The custom built bench was dropped off by Greg’s Best Man, Ray Mencio, while both the Merritts and Joneses arrived. Red and pink flower petals lined the sand to where Greg would be standing. The bench was placed, the table runner was flowing, champagne was next to champagne glasses, and the sun was perfectly placed behind them. When Chelsea arrived, Luke Combs' song “Beautiful Crazy” was playing. She walked out the back, through the flower petals, not paying attention to anyone else except a boyfriend who could barely keep it together. Greg had to ask twice before finally getting a yes! Chelsea turned around and saw her best friends, her parents, and Greg’s parents walking towards them. She was surprised once again by their own dog Jules, who came bolting out of the house with a bandana on that said “My Humans Are Getting Married,” and a FaceTime from her sister and her boyfriend who were able to watch the whole thing. A magical day came together with a toast, in her favorite place in the world, surrounded by her favorite people. The whole moment can be seen in a video, which was put together by Emily Miller, an undergraduate student at SHU. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hnMkGaW-aw
