In December 2013, Abby Duvall invited me to meet her friend, Jenn Campbell, for a night of hanging out over dinner and talking about falconry. Rather than study for my Parasitology final, I agreed to have some fun for once. Little did I know that that night would forever change my life. Jenn knew I was single at the time, so she asked me what my ideal guy would be like. I described a kind, loyal, gentle, smart, handsome, nature lover with long blonde hair and blue eyes. After showing me a photo of Greg, she started a 3-way conversation between us. Soon after, we were texting every day wondering when we might have a chance to meet in person. Fate decided that, rather than going to the Belize Zoo to work on jaguars and Harpy eagles, I was going to get snowed in for several days. On December 31, 2013, Greg and I met outside the Binghamton Event Center in a nearby parking lot. Greg kissed me and asked me to be his girlfriend. We had dinner with Jenn and went to a party with her friends, Richard and Anna. We played board games all night and shared a kiss at midnight. Five months later, Greg moved to Baltimore, MD, and I stayed behind in Ithaca, NY to finish my 2nd year of vet school. We spent 2 years driving back and forth to see each other. Friday nights were spent in Baltimore dancing and enjoying drinks together. At the end of Greg's time working for the Army Corps of Engineers, I graduated from Cornell's vet school. Ironically, he was accepted to Cornell's Chemistry PhD program, while I was being shipped off to NYC to complete a rotating internship. It was one of the hardest years of my life. We were both so busy that we rarely had time for visits. In the spring of 2017, we went to Carla's in Ithaca to discuss designs for an engagement ring. It made living in the city somehow bearable. After surviving AMC, I learned I was finally moving back to Ithaca to be with the love of my life. Three and a half years of long distance had gone by, but we were going strong. We were thrilled to be moving in with our good friend, Jonah, and to be in town with Justina again. I endured a year of working 7 days a week at Colonial and found out that I was rejected by every residency I had applied for. However, good news came when I was accepted for Texas A&M's surgery internship and had my first ever article accepted for publication. Greg and I knew we would have to do long distance again. We agreed that we could stay together through it all. On Saturday, May 26, 2018, Greg asked me to go on a morning hike to one of our favorite waterfalls in Treman State Park. It was a hot, sunny day, and everything somehow seemed magical. He asked me to wade out into the water at the base of the largest waterfall in the park. As a group of three hikers passed us, Greg took me over to a single rock island with flowing water. He started to tell me just how much he loved me and how wonderful these past few years had been. He said he was one of the luckiest people in the world and that I made every day better. Just as he started to tear up, he got down on one knee, presented me with a beautiful snowflake ring, and asked me to marry him. Through tears of happiness, I said, "yes" and heard cheers from above. At the top of the trail, our family and friends awaited with a picnic lunch and dessert. I have never been so happy in all my life to be surrounded by so much love. In November of 2018, Greg left Cornell with his Master's and moved to Texas with me. We married in the courthouse in Binghamton on May 23, 2019, fully planning to have a ceremony the following year, but life had other plans for us. We rescheduled our wedding twice, hoping things would improve, but they did not. Ultimately, we made the extremely painful decision to cancel everything while living in Saskatoon, SK, so I could complete my surgery residency and study for boards. Greg and I, having made it to the other side more in love than ever before, invite you to finally celebrate our marriage with us.
