How We Met

Jake and Kayla’s story began online after they both discovered their love for arriving at the airport early. Shortly after matching on Bumble, they had their first date at Burly Coffee in Bedford-Stuyvesant. They were both incredibly nervous - Kayla even arrived ten minutes early, a feat she has yet to accomplish since, fearing that they wouldn’t find an available table (Brooklyn hipsters love their coffee). After a few minutes of awkward small talk, they quickly settled into a comfortable, self-deprecating banter and haven’t turned back since. They both knew that they were in it for the long haul after a hilarious series of unfortunate events during their first trip together to Philadelphia. During the early stages of their relationship, Kayla traveled so much for work she was practically living out of a suitcase. It wasn’t long before they were living together and Jake began converting Kayla into a morning person.

Proposal

After a special year filled with traveling, picnics, and lots of spontaneous walks around New York City, Jake and Kayla started talking about their future together. When Jake’s parents visited New York to meet Kayla’s parents, his mother - always prepared - brought a family ring with her. Jake and Kayla’s Brooklyn apartment was less than 400 square feet, which meant it was pretty hard to keep something hidden for so long, but Jake somehow managed. He finally popped the question at Washington Square Park on their anniversary, and Kayla said yes!

Elopement

As much as they loved New York, it never really felt like home. After Kayla visited British Columbia for the first time to attend a family wedding, she quickly fell in love with the mountains, bike lanes, and food scene. It had all of the amenities of a big city, but with a small-town feel. They decided to elope on Leap Day 2020 at the coffee shop where they first met to help make Kayla’s immigration process even easier. Since their elopement, Kayla has become a Canadian permanent resident. They live in Vancouver, where they enjoy exploring the city, playing board games, and completing crosswords together. While we are legally married, we are looking forward to publicly tying the knot and celebrating with our loved ones in person!
