In a bold move, Grant invited Kaley to hike the Trans-Sierra after he saw that she was spending some time in the Lee Vining/Mammoth Lakes area. While she was flattered and intrigued, she wasn’t able to hike it on a whim... she lived in Denver at the time! Their connection continued to grow, however, and eventually Grant would visit Kaley in Colorado. Hiking, music and dancing set the tone for their relationship. Sparks flew and they both felt they had found something very special. They kept in touch while Kaley and Karey hiked in Nepal for 3 weeks and then they spent a week camping along the California Coast enjoying the sunshine, surf and starry nights. They continued to date long distance until the end of Grant’s fire season. He moved to Denver, got accepted into McCall’s Smokejumper program and invited Kaley to move to Idaho with him.... and so started their lifetime of adventuring together.
One Saturday morning, Grant woke up early and made a frittata for everyone before the group of friends set out on a backcountry ski/snowboard adventure together. Kaley should have clued in that something was up when Grant took up the back of the pack - he's usually leading the charge. Eventually, the group reached a clearing with a view about 2/3 of the way up the mountain. Grant asked Kaley if she wanted to take a picture with him. Kaley couldn't help herself, she gave him a hard time saying, "OHHHHHHH really?! You wanna take a picture HERE? I've actually heard the view is better from the top!" You see, a couple weeks prior, they were in the same spot with another friend and Kaley insisted on taking some pictures. Grant, antsy to continue on, had said, "Hey you guys, I bet the view is even better from the top... if we ever make it there at this rate." So, while Kaley was getting her splitboard turned around for a photo and simultaneously sassing Grant, he took a knee with his splitboard still attached to his feet, presented a beautiful family heirloom diamond ring to Kaley and asked her to be his wife. If you've seen the video, you know she was VERY surprised and let loose of a swear word or two as she happily accepted. They continued to the top, party skied with their friends, stuffed their faces with burgers in Cascade and spent most of the rest of the day celebrating and sharing champagne in the hot tub with their friends.
