We met on an online dating site (the true millennial way), and after some chatting we decided to meet up in Stillwater where Mitch lived at the time. We went out and got some drinks and ended up running into his Godparents who happened to be in town celebrating their anniversary. They like to think they had a part in getting us together. It turned out that Mitch was so charmed by my "Minnesota accent" that he asked me out on a second date for the very next day. We spent that whole next day together canoeing and having a good time, and the rest is history.
We were up at Mitch's family's cabin in Loretta Wisconsin for Labor Day weekend. We had just bought ourselves some kayaks that summer and we were going on our first overnight kayak trip on the Flambeau River. We had his dad drop us off at the boat landing, and as we were getting our kayaks ready I turned around and there was Mitch down on one knee. Mitch had just told his dad what he was about to do seconds prior and had him take pictures. It was definitely a surprise!
Very shortly into our wedding planning process, we decided to forgo the stress of planning a traditional wedding and chose to have a small ceremony. We have always loved traveling the world together, so getting married on top of a mountain on the other side of the world in New Zealand was more "us". There were definitely some bumps in the road and we ended up getting married a day later than planned and very early in the morning due to weather, but we did it! We're married! And in Mitch and Emily fashion, I changed out of my dress behind a boulder and we headed out on the rest of our adventures. It felt very special to spend our wedding day alone together in a beautiful place without the stress and distractions of a traditional wedding, but we really did miss having our family and friends there with us. We are very excited to celebrate with everyone at our reception!
