Tom and Grace’s story started in childhood as family friends in Pella. Think playdates, family gatherings, and probably at least one awkward group photo. But, as life tends to do, they drifted apart during high school and college. Fast forward to the summer of 2022: Tom had just bought a home in Pella, and Grace was in town recovering from jaw surgery. Tom invited Grace and her sister Hannah to a board game night at the new house… unbeknownst to him, Grace only agreed to attend if Hannah (living in Des Moines at the time) did as well. They both showed up, and that’s where the story truly began! Their reconnection started over shared interests – board games, pickleball, and a knack for turning competitive hobbies into bonding moments. Grace quickly became the first to show up and last to leave for gatherings Tom hosted, staying for “just one more game” of Cribbage, Lost Cities, or Yu-Gi-Oh! Tom admired Grace’s thoughtful nature and the way conversations with her could stretch late into the night without ever feeling long. Meanwhile, Grace was drawn to how easy it felt to talk to Tom – how he really listened, made her feel understood, and always seemed to say exactly what she needed to hear. Tom insists he wasn’t saying anything special, just giving her space to share what was on her mind. Either way, it worked, and even their quiet moments together felt meaningful. One of their favorite places that summer became Lake Thunderhead, a cabin getaway that’s been in Tom’s family since the 1980s. For Tom, it’s a place filled with childhood memories, family traditions, and countless sunsets over the water. For Grace, it was her first real taste of “lake life” – and she was all in. She loved the easy rhythm of days spent on the water, the quiet mornings with coffee on the deck, and even the chaos of Tom trying to teach her how to dock a jet ski. Their trips to Lake Thunderhead became cherished escapes, full of shared moments and inside jokes. After several weekends there, Grace even asked Tom out while on a jet ski ride around the lake! Even though he initially said no, Tom realized his mistake a few weeks later and changed his answer. Their relationship continued to grow through countless adventures, both big and small. But one night, in particular, stands out – a spontaneous visit to Noce Jazz Club. After leaving a formal work party early, they found themselves at Noce with a perfectly cozy table that felt like it had been reserved just for them. That night became their favorite date ever and eventually inspired them to choose Noce as their wedding venue. When the time came to propose, Tom knew there was no better place than Lake Thunderhead – a spot that had become so special to both of them. With friends and family nearby, the lake once again set the stage for an unforgettable moment. Now, they’re looking forward to a future filled with more jet ski rides, fierce board game battles, and nights spent side-by-side – always surrounded by the people they love most.
