In the fall of 2015, both Grace & Haomiao were studying abroad in Shanghai, China. Grace was on an undergrad accelerated Chinese language program & Hao was studying entrepreneurship at CEIBS as part of his MBA program. Grace had just arrived to grab a quick dinner with friends at a local expat bar on the now shutdown Yongkang Street called "Oh My Kebab." Hao was already there celebrating a friend's birthday. Hao went to the washroom, and on his way back to his table, decided to confidently sit down next to Grace at the bar. After a great chat that easily could have lasted hours, Grace & her friends left to head out to a nightclub (priorities, you know). On her way out, Hao stopped Grace & asked her the ever important question, "Can I have your WeChat?" From there, Hao and Grace went on several dates all over Shanghai-from walks along the Bund to drinking soju outside the 7/11 talking about anything & everything. A few days before Grace's flight back home to the US, Hao broached the next ever important question-"do you want to continue dating?" They both weren't sure how it would work out with Hao in Toronto & Grace in Baltimore but they figured if the weird alignment in the universe somehow brought them together in a tiny kebab shop in a city of 26 million people, that they would probably be just fine. After many flights between Toronto, Baltimore, New Jersey & Boston, Grace got a job offer in San Francisco. Hao moved out to the Bay Area shortly after & the two moved in together a year later. Fast forward 6 years from that first night in Shanghai, Grace and Hao decided that if they could get through not only long distance dating but also a global pandemic, they should make it official. Grace & Hao eloped in their living room on April 27, 2021, with their parents and the county clerk on a Zoom call. In order to still keep with tradition, they got "engaged" a few months later. They are so incredibly excited to celebrate with all their friends and family!
