Robert and Adriana were competitive teammates before becoming best friends. They both attended Virginia Tech as student-athletes on the swim team. Although they began their collegiate careers a year apart, their first connection was during the Christmas season of 2014. They quickly became very close during their training trip in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It did not take them long to realize they wanted to further their relationship. Nearly four years later on December 15, 2018, Robert made his move: to ask Adriana to spend forever together.

Adriana and Robert planned a trip 5 months in advance to see their best friends from college; Ian Ho and Maggie Gruber. They were spending the weekend in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with the Gruber family and attending the Patriots vs Steelers game at Heinz field. Maggie and Robert had the entire weekend planned: from seeing the Pittsburgh Skyline to gazing at the Christmas lights at the Botanical garden. They began their rainy Saturday morning by taking the Duquesne Incline to see the city of Pittsburgh. While Adriana thought Maggie was just taking a photo of her and Robert, she was actually recording the entire proposal. From the moment of the picture, to Robert kneeling in a puddle to ask her to spend forever together, Adriana was a crying mess as she kissed him "yes!' To celebrate, hundreds of photos were taken, a bottle (or two) of wine was shared, and happiness filled the air as Robert and Adriana began their next chapter of their lives together!
