Answer

There is no formal dress code. However, please be mindful that there will be a religious ceremony taking place prior to the reception. The reception will also take place in the synagogue which is a religious establishment. The Chuppah (canopy ceremony) will take place on a grassy area (weather permitting) so please wear appropriate shoes :)

Although we do appreciate people attending to be vaccinated, it is not mandatory. We do request everyone who is not vaccinated have a negative covid-19 test completed within 72 hours prior of the wedding. We are not requesting proof of vaccine or a negative test, but we are using the honor system so please be respectful

Question

What is a Bedeken?

Answer

The Bedeken is the veiling ceremony that takes place at a Jewish wedding just prior to the ceremony. The source of the veiling ceremony dates all the way back to biblical times. The first instance is when Rebecca veils herself as she is told Isaac is approaching. The Bible tells us that when Rebecca gazed upon Isaac for the first time, "she took her veil and covered herself" (Genesis 24:60). Here, the veil symbolizes the value of modesty. The word itself means to "check" or confirm and is drawn from the Biblical story of Jacob's wedding which is the second instance. Here, he has fallen in love with Rachel and they are to be married. Jacob does not look under the veil and discovers after the ceremony that he has married her older sister Leah. And so today, at the veiling of the bride, the groom is present to make sure that he is marrying his intended wife.

Question

What is a Chuppah?

Answer

A Chuppah is a canopy under which a Jewish couple stands during their wedding ceremony. The Chuppah is a symbol of God’s presence at a wedding and in the home being established under the canopy.
