We both found ourselves in a remote corner of Costa Rica at the Blue Osa Retreat and Spa attending a men’s yoga retreat. On the first day of the retreat, we were paired together for a partner exercise in which the only words we spoke were, “You. Are. Loved.” Needless to say, we knew something happened for each of us in that moment. The next day (Valentine’s Day) we had our first date and decided to be “yoga camp boyfriends” for the week. As we continued to spend time together that week, we recognized what we had was something magical and more than just a vacation romance. Before we left, Gordon had committed to visiting Hank in Chicago in two weeks’ time. As the relationship navigated the long-distance travails and Hank was winding down the last few months before his retirement, we realized that we were being given an amazing opportunity to match life and love’s timing. Without hesitation and much excitement, we began to prepare for Hank’s cross-country move from Chicago to California. Following Hank’s retirement, the packing and goodbyes began in earnest. After a 6-day road trip, we arrived in Laguna Beach ready to begin building a life together. Over the last few months, we’ve had an amazing opportunity to meet each other’s friends and families and feel very welcome by both. We laugh that neither of us ever formally proposed, because we knew from the very first moment we were heading in the same direction, wherever that may take us and knowing we would always do it together.
