I’d love to say this was fate. But honestly… it was me. I met Nolan first, back when we were just wee babes at the beginning of college. We were roommates who quickly became BFFs through our shared love of music, but he decided to abandon the urban chaos of Los Angeles for Portland, Oregon, a place that I begrudgingly admit fit him perfectly. Outdoorsy, adventurous, kind, and endlessly open-hearted, Nolan was building a life that felt intentional and grounded. A little later in college I met Sydney. She became just as much of a BFF when I more or less moved into the house she shared with my future wife and their close-knit group of friends, who welcomed me as one of their own. Sydney has a way of showing up fully for the people she loves: warm, sincere, bold, and just as happy on the couch reading a good book as she is exploring somewhere totally new. Also, very outdoorsy. At some point, the thought landed so clearly it felt obvious: Oh. These two are perfect for each other. So when our group of friends visited Portland, I did what any self-respecting BFF would do: I played matchmaker. At dinner one night, I very deliberately sat Sydney next to Nolan. Sydney knew exactly what I was up to. Nolan, blissfully unaware, did not. But something sparked anyway: that easy, unmistakable click when two people realize they’re speaking the same language. Not long after that trip, Sydney moved to Portland too. And while their story was already unfolding, it wasn’t until my wedding — where they both stood beside us as part of the wedding party — that I truly saw how deeply their connection had taken root. Somewhere between shared values, long conversations, and celebrating love all around them, they found their own. The years that followed were filled with all the good stuff: moving in together, building a home, and collecting a thousand tiny moments that quietly turned into something extraordinary. And then, on a hike with Mount Jefferson stretching out behind them, Nolan asked Sydney to marry him: a moment as thoughtful, beautiful, and intentional as the love they share. Watching this story come to life has been one of my greatest joys. I may have introduced them, but the love they built belongs entirely to them: steady, full of adventure, and deeply genuine, the kind that only grows stronger with time.
