How We Met

September 2013

Amanda had just transferred to Hofstra University. On the first day of the semester, Amanda sat down in a lecture hall. It was only a few minutes later that Michael happened to sit down next to her, but not without leaving one empty seat in between them (he was rather shy after all). Throughout the semester, they had some light conversations. During this time, Michael started to develop a "crush" on Amanda. Towards the end of the semester, they learned that in a few weeks' time, they would both be going on the same Birthright Israel trip. While in Israel, Michael and Amanda learned how much they had in common. They had the same sense of humor and a knack for understanding each other's obscure references. This resulted in them becoming close friends. When they returned back home and started the Spring semester, they had another class together; only this time, Michael wasn't too shy to sit right next to Amanda. The two spent more and more time together. Finally, Michael worked up enough courage to ask Amanda out on a date...and the rest is history!

The Proposal

May 2019

Amanda and Michael got engaged at the place where it all began - Hofstra University. Every Spring, Hofstra hosts a "Tulip Festival" where people come to tour the campus and see all of the trees and flowers in full bloom. Michael had planned with each of their families to attend this event, as they had done in previous years. The goal this year was to to go through the day as if nothing out of the ordinary would be taking place. Amanda had no idea of the surprise that was in store! Of course, this particular day was a rather cold and rainy one; Michael was extremely stressed. Additionally, he had a difficult time convincing Amanda to separate from their families - she only wanted to walk with her dad and even hug trees that she liked. Finally, when there were no more trees to be hugged, Michael took Amanda by the hand and led her to a secluded courtyard. Here, after five years of dating, he got down on one knee, and nervously, yet excitedly, asked Amanda if she would marry him. She said yes!!!

Significance of our Wedding Date

November 16th

This date, November 16th, is a very special and meaningful day for both Amanda and Michael. Amanda's grandmother Aileen unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. She was a very important person in each of their lives. Since "Maw" was living out of state, and was unable to travel, they had initially discussed getting married where she would be able to attend the wedding. Since November 16th is Maw's birthday, Amanda and Michael feel that getting married on this date will allow them to have Maw's presence as much as possible on both their special day and throughout their lives together. In addition, the 16th of the month symbolizes two other important events of their relationship. Amanda and Michael's first date occurred on February 16th and on March 16th, their relationship became official. #ShesAZuckerForAGoodman
