The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción is situated in front of Parque Calderon. The plan of the cathedral was drawn up by Juan Bautista Stiehle (1829-1899) — a German-born friar who arrived in Cuenca from Alsace in 1873 — on suggestions made by Bishop León Garrido. Its facade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy). When the cathedral was first constructed 9,000 out of Cuenca's 10,000 inhabitants could fit in the building. Cost: Church: Free Rooftop: $0-$3USD
The Pumapungo Museum, established in 1979, is not just a repository of artifacts but a gateway to understanding the rich cultural tapestry of Ecuador. The museum’s name, meaning ‘Puma Bridge,’ reflects its historical roots and the significance of the site it occupies. Over the years, the museum has hosted numerous significant exhibitions, including works by Salvador Dalí, showcasing its prominence in the art world. The Pumapungo Museum stands on a site that was once a crucial part of the Incan empire. The area, known as Tomebamba, was an important administrative center and played a vital role in the region’s history. The museum’s establishment aimed to preserve this heritage and provide a comprehensive understanding of Ecuador’s diverse cultures. Cost: Free
The former religious seminary dedicated to San Luis is a little gem and the photos of the main patio with the blue domes of the Cathedral in the background are famous. The colonial-style structure has recently been renovated and houses restaurants, bars, shops and cultural spaces.
Cuenca is a very interesting city, there's truly something for everyone. If you have time, view it from above. Take a taxi or a bus to the Mirador de Turi, where in addition to the swings, you'll find little shops and a small church to visit, even if just for a meal with a beautiful view.
If you enjoy outdoor adventures,, you really should include a visit to this area. It will be one of the highlights of any trip to a country already offering many climbing opportunities. The Cajas area is a wonderful place, with mountains and lakes offering great landscapes for great hiking and a couple of easy peaks to summit.
