Alcatraz Island is one of San Francisco's famous landmarks about 1.25 miles offshore. Most well known for being converted into one of the most notorious high-security prisons in 1934. During the 29 years it was in use, the prison held some of the most notorious criminals in American history including gangsters such as Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly and Bumpy Johnson. You can now tour and experience the home of some of those notorious criminals.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the city of San Francisco—the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula—to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. Another one of San Francisco's most well-known landmarks and described as "possible the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world." At the time of its opening in 1937, it was both the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world.
