This large, modern museum, built with the tobacco wealth of the León Jimenez family, is a world-class institution with an impressive collection of paintings that trace the evolution of Dominican art in the 20th century. There are three exhibition rooms in the main building: one focuses on the island’s biodiversity, Taíno history and cultural diversity; a second displays a permanent collection of Dominican art; and an upstairs room houses temporary art exhibits. The aviary and photography exhibition are out the back. The Centro León is a few kilometers east of downtown. A taxi there will cost around RD$150, or pick up a Ruta A concho (private car that follows a set route; RD$20) along Calle del Sol – not all Ruta A conchos go as far as the Centro León, though, so be sure to ask.

The rise of Dominican tobacco planting dates from 1870, with the arrival of large equity investors, attracted at that time by the large sugar cane plantations in the east and south regions. However, they found an excellent potential for cultivation in the northern region (Santiago) of the country. By 1907 the country had more than 87 cigar factories and 25 cigarette factories. The Dominican tobacco and their products occupy a prominent place of honor for its unquestionable quality that has received international recognition on the part of nations and consumers, a fact that is the pride of our nation. Tobacco plantations and cigars are huge trades of the Dominican culture and getting to know its history and process is a fun activity to do while on the island.
This small gallery displays Dominican painting, photography and sculpture. Some nights of the week a film club meets to screen art-house and good-quality Hollywood flicks (with free admission). There’s sometimes live music (from RD$100) and, on Saturday, live theater (RD$100).
