Our story

12/25/2019

I think everyone knows our story, but I’m going to give a brief summary and share how we got here today: MARRIED! Thank you, Jesus! On August 28, 2019, I returned to Georgia and began studying English at Kennesaw State University. I didn’t have a car, so I took Uber to get to school. The Uber dropped me off in the school parking lot, and I would walk across the entire campus to reach my classroom. During these walks, I saw those eyes as blue as the sky. He smiled at me, and it didn’t take long for him to ask for my phone number (he’s quick when he wants to be). I didn’t understand anything he was saying, so I showed him the sentence I had already saved in my Google Translate: “I DON’T SPEAK ENGLISH.” He replied, “I DON’T SPEAK SPANISH.” I responded, “BUT I SPEAK PORTUGUESE.” He asked for my number— all through Google Translate. It was so quiet, but our eyes and smiles spoke for us. We began texting each other, all in English. Our first date was at Starbucks that evening. I had hot chocolate, and he had tea. I memorized and practiced several phrases in English to talk to him, but he couldn’t talk much that day because he was sick. We texted every day, practically every hour, telling each other how much we missed and wanted to be together. Even though our conversations relied heavily on Google Translate, we connected deeply. Eventually, I invited him to spend Christmas 2019 with my family, and at midnight, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Everything was beautiful and wonderful, though we faced both happy and sad moments. We lost our dog, we lost our babies, and we had some very serious and difficult conversations. Yet we also experienced some of the happiest days together. God has always been part of our relationship. We are growing, evolving, and giving each other the best version of ourselves every day. We are not perfect, but we have committed to making fewer mistakes, fixing fewer things, and spending more time loving each other and being happy. Our love is unconditional, pure, and sincere. We’ve declared before God that we are married forever. Today, we are a family. We have our cats, the neighbors’ cats, our precious family, and our friends. We no longer need “Google Translate,” except for maybe one word a week— because now he wants to learn everything in Portuguese! I crossed oceans and an entire university campus to find my best friend, my lover, and my husband! We were legally married on August 19, 2023, and now I will dress as a bride, and he will wait for me at the altar, with the people we love surrounding us to bless our union, just as God promised!
