How We Met

Our love story starts, as all great love stories do, with jury duty. Brandon was the attorney. Jessica's mom was on the jury. Brandon, doing his job in front of a panel of strangers, had no idea that one of those strangers had spent the last several days mentally drafting a daughter-of-mine PowerPoint. About a week into the trial, Jessica's mom — known to her fellow jurors by her nickname, "The Note Taker" — couldn't take it anymore. She had been telling Jessica every night about the cute lawyer in the courtroom. Jessica's response each day was "Okay… and what are you going to do about it?" Apparently, that was the wrong question to ask. Halfway through the trial, during a break, Jessica's mom marched right up to Brandon's legal team and asked — out loud, in a courthouse, in the middle of an active trial — whether Brandon was single. For those unfamiliar with the legal system: this is wildly illegal. Jurors cannot talk to the attorneys. Brandon's team, doing their best not to break into laughter, told her they unfortunately could not engage. She walked away convinced she had her answer: Brandon must have a girlfriend. From that day on, "The Note Taker" was quietly reassigned a new nickname behind the scenes: "Brandon's Future Mother-in-Law." A few days later, the trial wrapped up — and Brandon lost. Before he could even process what was happening, Jessica's mom was firing off questions like a deposition: How old are you? How tall are you? Are you single? Then, without waiting for him to recover, she pulled out her phone and said, "I have a daughter I want to set you up with," and held up a picture of Jessica. Brandon, who had spent approximately 0.4 seconds bracing for the worst, looked at the photo and thought: I just lost a case — what do I have to lose now? He handed Jessica's mom his phone number. Jessica texted him that same day. Her opening line: "Hey Brandon, I'm sorry you lost the trial. But you know what they say — when life gives you lemons, you take the juror's daughter out to dinner." Brandon took Jessica out to dinner the following week, and they have been together ever since. Brandon may have lost the trial, but he walked out of that courtroom with a much better verdict.
