We met the old fashioned way... on a dating app :) After a lengthy exchange of messages (primarily because Nancy didn't realize Tris saying was repeatedly trying to ask her out) we finally met for a drink in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at a bar called Moonlight Mile. (Shout out to Sam Wils for the recommendation!) The evening got off to a great start. We found ourselves immersed in conversation after only a few minutes. Between the bourbon, the music, and the fact that Nancy was hit on right in front of Tris made it an action packed first date. Nancy originally planned to leave after an hour to have dinner with a friend, but Tris ordered his second drink right before she was about to bail. She felt bad leaving him all alone with a full drink, so she cancelled her plans (shout out to Leah Grammar for her flexibility!) We ended up staying at Moonlight Mile for a while before heading to Naked Dog to grab dinner. Tris walked Nancy back to the "general area" of her apartment because it's NYC and stranger danger is real. We soon met up again for dinner and a comedy show, but blew off the show because Tris is funny enough. The rest, as they say, is history.
After about a year of dating we moved in together in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Tris came in from Manhattan and Nancy from Greenpoint. Within a week of living together we traveled to Virginia to bring our puppy Ned home. Adding Ned to the mix definitely came with its challenges and even changed the dynamic of our relationship at first. However, he turned us into a family and helped us realize that we are a great team. Raising young Eddard brought us closer together and getting him is one of the best decisions we have made.
One of the best perks of our living in our neighborhood is the proximity to Prospect Park. The park holds "off leash" hours each morning and essentially becomes the city's largest dog park. We like to take Ned there on weekends so he can run around and play with his friends. Tris did some scouting while Nancy was in Washington D.C. for a play and found what he thought would be the perfect spot to pop the question. The first Saturday she was back, Tris obsessively checked the weather forecast. After letting Ned romp with the other dogs in the main field for a few moments, Tris invited Nancy to check out a nearby koi pond. Once we arrived, Nancy immediately became suspicious that something was up. There was a person playing a saxophone and people birdwatching with high-def cameras. Tris found a spot where we had a bit more privacy. He pretended to play with Ned, awkwardly got down on one knee and said, "Hey, if I give you something will you hold on to it for me"? There was silence...followed by more silence. Tris added, "No, I'm serious, will you marry me?" Nancy finally said yes but the ring did not fit. Luckily we were able to get the ring on and went back to the open field so Ned could celebrate. Thankfully, Tris redeemed himself by recreating their first date that evening and inviting some close friends to help us celebrate. It is not the type of proposal that you see in the movies, but it worked for us.
