Rachel and Josh will be getting married under a chuppah (a four-post canopy under which Jewish wedding ceremonies are performed). The top of the chuppah will be made of a tallis (a traditional Jewish prayer shawl). The one for the ceremony is extra special, as Rachel's entire family tree is visible going back to the early 1800s. During the ceremony, Rachel will encircle Josh 3 times and then Josh will encircle Rachel 3 times to symbolize the creation of a private world of their own within the outer world, as well as to signify the centrality of each spouse in each other's lives. This will conclude with them encircling each other together once, bringing the number of circles to 7, which is a lucky number in Judaism.
Yes! The rings Rachel and Josh will exchange during the ceremony will be simple gold bands (meant to be a gift of known value to the bride) and will be placed on the index finger of the right hand (because this finger is the most active, therefore the bride can show off the ring more easily!). At the end of the ceremony, Josh will stomp on a napkin-wrapped glass cup to symbolize the fragility of human relationships and the covenant they will enter with each other, as well as a way to remember the pain and loss Jewish people have endured throughout time.
Havdalah is a Jewish ceremony to close out Shabbat- the Jewish day of rest (Friday night to Saturday night). During havdalah, we engage the 5 senses and set intention for the upcoming week. This particular havdalah ceremony will be special, as Rachel and Josh will be setting intention for this next chapter of their lives. Join us if you want on Saturday night before the ice cream social!
Sunscreen (for your face and body), sunglasses, a hat (if you want), and bug spray. Make sure to bring a bathing suit for the beach or hotel pool!
