It was the summer of 2012, and Nina and Gil were both first year counselors at Camp Ramah in California. Since it was both of their first year as counselors, they had mandatory training classes that they had to take. On the first day of these classes, their teacher asked the class to find a random person in the room with whom to create a secret handshake. Gil saw Nina across the room from him (he swears by this) and knew he wanted her to be his partner for this assignment. And that is how it all began… Because they were placed on the same staff, and enjoyed spending time together, they were practically inseparable. That summer Gil and Nina laughed together, took care of their campers together, and spent most nights exploring camp staring at the stars just the two of them. When that summer was over they parted ways not knowing if or when their paths would cross again later on. Almost a decade later, Nina kept running into Gil’s friends. Whether it was at a workout class, or a bar, Gil would always get notified by his friends that the girl who he had liked so long ago was reappearing around town. Gil would then take this information and hope to see Nina one day at these places she frequented. So much so that he showed up to a workout class that he knew she went to, hoping to “run into” her there…It didn’t work. Here is where Nina’s story and Gil’s story sound a little different… Gil’s version: I reached out over and over again asking to take Nina out on a date. It took almost a year of excuses from Nina (she was sick, and then busy, and then “out of town for 3 weekends in a row”...yeah right) until she finally agreed to go on a date with me just to shut me up. Nina’s version: I didn’t even really realize that Gil remembered me from all those years ago. Honestly, I was teaching full time, and in grad school so I was busy and just did not have time for boys. When he kept reaching out I really didn’t think much of it. And then something clicked, I thought to myself just go out with the guy to see what happens. Gil and Nina then go on their first date, where they sat for hours and reminisced on camp stories as well as caught up on what they have both been up to in their adult lives. Hours later, they said their goodbyes, both knowing they wanted to see each other again. Gil was back to texting Nina constantly, but this time she was responding and just as excited to spend more time with him. That is how it all started and 3 years later, they are finally getting married.
