Adam's story: Laura and I initially met while she was a senior resident and I was a lowly intern at the VA hospital. We didn't get to talk much during that busy time (except for when I had to clean up messes that her team left after leaving for the day). A few months later, one of our friends mentioned that she thought we'd be a great match and gave me her number. I cold-called her and somehow convinced her to have dinner with me. I won over her dog, Ember's, heart before hers, and the rest is history. Laura's story: One of my friends asked, out-of-the-blue, "Are you still single?" Immediately offended by her tone, I replied defensively, "Yes." She proceeded to tell me that she had found the perfect guy for me. "He's tall, can fix things around the house, and loves dogs." Skeptically, I agreed to let her give him my number. A few days later, I got a phone call from an unknown number. So, obviously, I didn't answer. He left a voicemail that said, "Hey, this is Adam Gray. I don't know if you remember me. I was going to ask you about something, but I will call you back later." I called him back, and we set a date.
Hiking along the edge of the jungle on Costa Rica's shore line, I was hot, dirty and bloody (after falling and skinning my knee on the way). We stopped at a beautiful beach that was completely deserted. After some digging in his bag, Adam pulled out a crumpled up piece of paper and handed it to me. I started laughing, thinking he was handing me his trash, until I read it and realized it was the receipt from our first date. When I looked up, Adam was down on one knee. He said, "I knew from the beginning that this was something special. Will you marry me?"
