What is Silent Disco? An event where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing. There are typically 3 stations that are curated by 3 DJs playing different styles of music (pop, hip hop, rock, etc.). Depending on what station you are on, your headphones illuminate a different color (ie. Green, Blue, Red). Now onto the stories... Isabelle's Side: It was a Saturday night and I was out having a girls night after recently declaring I was going to enjoy the single life. We went to The Stuffed Olive for martinis and then made our way over to "Hush" the only silent disco bar in town. After dancing for over an hour, I saw a large group of recent Drake alumni walk into the bar. One of the guys wearing a cute sweater in the group immediately caught my eye, that guy was Alex. Remembering it was a girls night, I refocused and kept dancing with my friends. No longer than 30 minutes from then that guy in the sweater came right next to me (both listening to the Blue station) and we danced/sang next to each other. We went our separate ways and my group left. I went onto Instagram to see if I could find the guy I recognized from Drake and luckily I was able to find Alex's profile. So I immediately followed him on Instagram... at 2:00 AM. The next day Alex followed me back on Instagram AND LIKED my most recent photo. So naturally I liked his most recent photo (to show him I was interested of course). Two days later Alex sent me a DM on Instagram and within a week we were on our first date at a dueling piano bar. During our first date, someone asked how long we had been dating stating we were an adorable couple. I'm forever grateful that Alex sent that DM. I feel like the luckiest girl to have my best friend and an incredible future husband in Alex. Alex's Side: It started as just another post grad Saturday night. My roommates and I got together with some friends and decided to walk to downtown Des Moines bars to have a fun time. As often happened back in those days, we enjoyed some beverages and decided that heading to Hush (the silent disco bar) was a perfect place to end our night. The night was going how many had gone before it, when suddenly something different happened. This cute girl caught my eye. I recognized her from Drake, but I had never talked to her. Something about her glances compelled me to approach her and dance next to her but recognizing she was with her friends, I did not stop to introduce myself. I did not notice when the girl left, but I didn't see her again that night, and I thought I had maybe missed my chance. The following morning I woke up to a follow request from the girl at the bar and noticed it came in at almost 2AM! Her name was Isabelle Tharp, and I was immediately intrigued as to why she had followed me. Had I introduced myself without remembering it?! I immediately followed her back and liked her most recent picture just to see what would happen... and a few hours later she liked one of my pictures as a response! The ball was back in my court, but I was struggling to figure out how to make a move. After discussing what to do with my roommates, consulting with a mutual friend to make sure she was single, and asking my sister for advice, I finally sent a DM and it said, "Hey! It was good to see you the other night! Hope I didn't make too big a fool of myself at Hush!😅 Did you have a good night?" I sent the message and waited nervously for what felt like hours for a response (Isabelle later told me she waited 30 minutes to look at the message on purpose), but eventually she responded. After exchanging a few messages I asked her to go for drinks, and she said yes! After the first date I knew Isabelle was special, and it only took me 3.5 years to get down on a knee and ask her to be my wife. Best decision I've ever made!
