It all began one evening on June 16, 1974, under the neon glow of the Stardust Skating Rink in San Bernardino. George was minding his own business when a blur of motion caught his eye - it was a beautiful young woman who he later would find out name was Ida Herndon. She was a local softball player, navigating the rink with effortless speed. As she flew past him, George didn't just watch, he gave her his best "shaft look", a bold glance that let her know he was intrigued. It was something about Ida's spirit that sparked a curiosity in him that he could not ignore. The session ended, but the story was just beginning. Ida and her friends headed to a local Dairy Queen for a post-skate treat, with George and his crew trailing close behind. In a classic gentlemanly move, George offered to pay for her soft-serve ice cream. Ida, being the ever independent soul she was, politely declined. But the "chase" was officially on. George, a determined young man from Miami, Florida, wasn't about to give up so easily. The Season of Courting: Over the next 2 years, George proved his devotion through more than just smooth looks. Their love grew in the spaces between. The Simple Moments: George would help Ida with chores and they enjoyed long group dates. The Adventures: From strikes at the bowling alley to the thrills of amusement parks and taking in salty air at the beach. The commitment: A newly enlisted soldier in the army; a proposal; and a romantic overseas engagement sealed their future together. On June 19, 1976 they stood before God and their family and friends at Carter Memorial Church of God in Christ to become one. They shared their first dance to a song written just for them by Carol Magee, aptly titled "Together in Him." A Lifetime of Triumph: Their journey has taken them across the globe -from the landscapes of Kitzingen, Germany to the hills of San Francisco, to the heart of Texas, and back home to San Bernardino. Through every trial and every triumph, their faith has been their anchor. For over 50 years, they have served the church side-by-side. The world has seen them elevated in ministry from Brother and Sister to Pastor and First Lady", and now to their current roles as Bishop and Supervisor. Their lives are a living testament to the phrase "God has kept us." A Love that never stops saying "I Do" even 50+ years later. Perhaps the most beautiful part of their story is that they never stopped choosing each other. To celebrate their enduring bond, they have held 10 weddings - renewing their vows every 5 years. Now you can be apart of their 11th celebration. Each ceremony is a reminder that while the skating rink may be a memory, the flame George felt for Ida that first night, still burns brighter than ever.
