How We Met

Alyssa took the bus to Georgetown after work, ready to meet up with the guy whose first message to her on Hinge (dating app) was "Marry me?" The bold comment made her laugh but since it was in response to her "Looking for someone to wake up before dawn to get first tracks" comment (snowboarding reference), she figured at least they had a shared hobby. Little did they both know, almost three years later, he'd be asking the question for real. George had suggested playing bocce ball at Pinstripes for the first date. Alyssa likes activities so she was already more excited for this date than the typical "let's grab a drink." George ordered Miller Lite, the beer of choice for Alyssa's family. The conversation flowed easily and George knew how to be just the right amount of competitive. Things felt natural as George slipped his hand into Alyssa's. When he drove her home, he was sure they'd be going on a second date. Alyssa went to sleep smiling. Date #2 was wine & paint night, #3 was a seafood restaurant, #4 was canoeing. Alyssa and George started off their relationship always seeking the next activity/adventure, something that would define their relationship moving forward. They officially started dating after George accompanied her to tour Wharton (UPenn) for business school. They were glad she chose Darden (UVA) instead, easing the challenges of a long distance relationship. Charlottesville became home in addition to Rockville, MD. On 7/21/21, George proposed to Alyssa on the Rivanna Trail in Charlottesville. They had set a goal to do the 21-mile hike in segments and it was their last segment. He said "there's one more thing we have to do before we leave Charlottesville" as he got down on one knee. She, of course, said yes.
