A Bat Mitzvah is a Jewish coming-of-age ceremony marking the moment a girl becomes a young adult in the eyes of Jewish tradition--typically at age 12 or 13. The term literally means "daughter of the commandment," signifying that she's now old enough to take on the religious and ethical responsibilities of an adult member of the Jewish community. (For boys, the equivalent is called a Bar Mitzvah, held at 13.) The ceremony itself takes place during a synagogue service, where Gemma will read from the Torah (the Hebrew Bible) — often chanting in Hebrew, which she's spent years practicing. Gemma will also share a personal reflection on the meaning of her Torah portion. It's a meaningful milestone that blends thousands of years of tradition with a very personal moment of growth. After the service, we celebrate! The party that follows is a joyful gathering of family and friends — think great food, music, dancing, and a few classic Bat Mitzvah traditions (Google "bat mitzvah chair dance") sprinkled in. Whether you're familiar with the tradition or it's your first time attending, it'll be a great, accessible time for all!
For the ceremony at Temple Kol Tikvah, you'll want to dress like you would for a typical religious service at any house of worship. As far as congregations go, TKT is on the more relaxed side, so you'll be at home in anything from a simple dress/decent pants and shirt to something more formal. At night, the action moves to the Peninsula Club for dancing and cocktails, all overlooking Lake Norman. Dress for a relaxed, waterfront cocktail party! For women, think lightweight fabrics, bright colors, soft florals and comfortable footwear. For men, nice slacks, a blazer, and yes, comfortable footwear are the way to go.
