It was February 2023. Gavin had just started a new job and was invited to a going-away party for a colleague at Bullfeathers, a Capitol Hill staple. After working from home for the previous two years, he decided to take the opportunity to get out and socialize with his new colleagues. At some point during the evening, someone asked, “So how is dating these days?” Gavin answered honestly: “Not great. The pandemic kind of changed the entire dynamic.” Almost immediately after saying that, Margaret Tucker walked by, and Gavin noticed her and asked a friend if she might be single and whether they could be introduced. Their friend replied, “Actually, yes, she is. I can introduce you.” The night carried on, and Gavin did his best to make small talk in the loud bar, where meaningful conversation was hard to come by. Then, by pure luck, he noticed Margaret Tucker was getting ready to leave and decided he had one last chance to ask for her number. It seems funny now, but at the time Margaret Tucker worked for the American Dental Association, and Gavin worked on health policy for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Trying to use health care as common ground, he asked, “Hey, would you ever want to get together and discuss health care policy?” Somehow, that line worked. They exchanged phone numbers, and Gavin later joked that while the line got him the date, Margaret Tucker was far more interested in getting to know him than discussing wonky health policy. That moment marked the beginning of an incredible relationship, one that would take the two of them, along with their beloved goldendoodle Penny Lane, on adventures near and far. From time in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, to Jamaica, to many trips to Lynchburg and the mountains nearby, to more recent travels in Portugal with some of their very best friends, they have built a life full of laughter, memories, and shared adventure. Along the way, they also discovered just how naturally their families fit together. Serendipity brought them together. On November 28, 2025, Gavin asked Margaret Tucker if she would do him the honor of spending the rest of her life with him. Thank you so very much for being a part of their story. They are so fortunate to have you as a guest for their wedding. This story would not be the same without you.
