Gautum and Katey met at work in the Operating Room. Their first conversation centered on their mutual beginnings in the state of Missouri. Their matchmaking yenta, Gautum's co-fellow, Adam Luchey stepped in and took matters into his own hands. He invited them both out to a "group" dinner outing. But, on the night of the dinner, Katey and Gautum were the only two who showed up. They got drinks and waited, thinking the others would straggle in. After a while, they texted Adam to find out the hold up. His response, "Oh, it's just you guys, have fun!" It was a set up! Match made.

Gautum and Katey decided to go on a trip to South America, visiting Peru, Argentina and Chile. For the first half of the trip, they went on a 5 day 4 night hike up the Salkantay trail to Macchu Picchu. On the morning of the last day, as the sun was rising over the incredible ruins, Gautum proposed to Katey and said, "If we can survive the last 5 days together, we can survive anything!" Of course she said yes!
